New Business Opportunities in India

A wide range of upcoming business opportunities has come up in the last couple of decades in India. Instead of listing it all here right away, let us consider the latest trends thematically.

1. Mobile / Internet Wave:

Perhaps the biggest trend in recent times has been the explosion of mobile and internet-based businesses such as services for social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), e-commerce (e.g. Amazon, Flipkart), service aggregators (e.g. Ola, Uber), search and discovery businesses (e.g. Practo, Zomato), e-payments and e-wallets, and so on. The recent addition to e-businesses has been the streaming of media content on mobiles and laptops (Hotstar, Netflix). While the examples here are those of popular businesses, several small, localized businesses around these have also sprung up in recent times.

2. Analytics / IoT / AI / Machine Learning / Deep Learning:

Never before were individuals and businesses so keen on data-driven decision-making, and rightly so, as it has now become fundamental to survival. Near real-time analysis, actionable insights, and highly contextualized data have become the buzzword of India’s technology revolution.

3. Designing / Content / Marketing and Promotions:

Indian businesses have only recently warmed up to the need for engaging content, professional design, and curated, targeted marketing. This has led to a large number of businesses starting up in this arena.

4Business Auxiliary Services:

With the unstoppable startup wave that has resonated all over the country, business support services such as incorporation, staffing, IT set-up, website development, tax filing, legal support services, etc. are more in demand than ever before!

5. Plug-n-Play Private and Commercial Spaces:

Even as urban and semi-urban India faces space-crunch, a new line of businesses has come up for managing space creatively and offering at the budget and/or premium both for private and commercial use. Tier I and tier II cities are the biggest consumers of space solutions in the country at present.

6. Beauty, Fitness, and Well-being:

An increasing proportion of the current generation is inclined towards conscious living, look-good factor, and inner well-being. Spas and salons, massage services, yoga and meditation, fitness centers and wearables, and supplements and nutri-food, are on the rise. Not just established brands, but also a large number of small businesses are also thriving locally.

The above list of businesses is by no means exhaustive but is intended to be a general overview of the new and upcoming business opportunities in India. If you are looking to take the plunge into a trending business opportunity in India and especially if this is your first time, it is advisable that you either buy an existing business or start a franchise of an established business. This will help you start your venture with minimum risk and at considerably lower upfront investment.

What are SMART goals? How to set a SMART Goal?

Setting goals will give you a sense of purpose, focus your limited time and energy on what's really important, and motivate you to achieve something that is meaningful to you.

Ultimately, setting goals is about intentionally creating the life that you want; one step at a time.

Let’s start with the "wrong" goals.

A wrong goal is often a goal that’s imposed by others, whether explicitly or implicitly. It’s something we feel we should do based on our parents’ expectations, what our friends and colleagues are doing, the societal norms that exist around us.

A wrong goal is not aligned with your personal values, it’s inconsistent with your underlying beliefs, and it’s not something you fundamentally and genuinely care about.

When we choose the “wrong” goal we’re inevitably going to be half-hearted in our attempts at achieving them, which means we’re likely to fail. This has implications not just for the particular goal in question but more broadly, as we create a precedent for failure and we start to think of ourselves as “quitters”. It’s much harder to achieve a goal where we’ve already failed in the past.
One of my favorite quotes is this:

“It doesn’t really matter how fast you’re going if you’re heading in the wrong direction.” - Stephen Covey, author of the classic, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

So even if you’re achieving those goals, you’re ticking them off at an impressive pace, what’s the point if you don’t actually care about the result? Or, worse, if the result is detrimental to you in some way?

Having the right goals in place is fundamental to successfully achieving them, and for that achievement to really contribute to your happiness and life satisfaction.
So what are the "right" goals?

A meaningful goal is one that you’ve been thinking about for months or even years. This shows commitment, which will be important in getting you over that finishing line.

A meaningful goal is one for which you are intrinsically motivated, versus someone else telling you that you should do it. Again, this will make sure that you’re committed to working hard in order to achieve it.

A meaningful goal is one that is consistent with your personal values.

A meaningful goal is one that you’re willing to work hard for. More than what you have to do to achieve it, ask yourself: what are you willing to give up?

And a meaningful goal is one that will truly have an impact on your life, in terms of your happiness, wellbeing, general life satisfaction, or any other aspect of your life that is important to you.

To get the ideas flowing, try asking yourself the following questions:

1. Do you remember what your goals were as a child? As a teenager?

2. Fast-forward to when you’re sitting in that rocking chair in your old age: what advice would you give your younger self?

3. Fast-forward a little further: how do you want people to remember you when you’re gone?

4. How do you want to spend your time? What does your ideal day look like?

5. What makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning?

6. What do you want to learn?

7. Who do you want to spend your time with?

Try to think of different areas of your life: health and fitness, career, family, personal development... And aim for a mix of ambitious and more achievable goals, personal and externally focused, educational and fun, short-term and long-term…

Finally, we come to the SMART part!

S – Specific: Getting specific on the goals that you want to achieve will give you more clarity on what success looks like, and help you to identify the concrete steps that will get you there.

M – Measurable: If you can’t measure your goal, then how will you know if you’ve achieved it? How will you track your progress?

A – Attainable: Goals that may seem completely out of your reach can become achievable if you break them down into smaller steps and give yourself a reasonable time frame in which to achieve them.

R – Relevant: A relevant goal is a goal that is meaningful to you, as well as being relevant to the wider context, to what’s going on in the world around you, personally and professionally.

T – Time-bound: Finally, setting a deadline will help you to focus and will also give you a sense of urgency, which can motivate you to act now rather than putting it off until later.

Why Personal Branding Is More Important Than Ever?

Today we had a session with another NITIE alumni, Nikhil Kulkarni, 2005 batch pass-out, worked with KPMG for 11 years, and left that to become an entrepreneur and founded DarwinTech in 2016. The session was about the Importance of Communication. How important it is to know to communicate with others to be successful in professional as well as personal life. He owes most of his success to communication rather than the technical skills he acquired in life. There is no doubt that technical skills are important but what is more important how you use communication to make others understand complex things in a simpler way, how you get their attention. Communication is not just speaking, it is the transfer of ideas through images, videos, data, etc.

The Agenda of the session was:

    1. Business Communication in consulting

    2. Structuring your content - Pyramid Principle

    3. Creating Impact - Tips and tricks

    4. Creating a 'Personal Brand' - why, how, when?

    Business Communication in consulting

As the world and business evolve, specialists are increasingly in demand. Expert consultants continually face the challenge of making their extensive knowledge of complicated concepts understandable to their clients. Those who succeed have a definitive advantage in the global marketplace.

Regardless of your field of expertise, interpersonal communication is the foundation of consulting work. Connecting with clients, understanding their needs, and simplifying ideas without dumbing them down are vital parts of the consultant/client relationship. Without a physical product to sell, it's all about selling yourself –and good communicators will lead the pack.

    The Pyramid Principle

The Pyramid Principle advocates that “ideas in writing should always form a pyramid under a single thought.” The single thought is the answer to the executive’s question. Underneath the single thought, you are supposed to group and summarize the next level of supporting ideas and arguments. Then, for each supporting idea or argument, break that further into more ideas or arguments until you have formed a pyramid. The Pyramid Principle teaches that “Ideas at any level in the pyramid must always be summaries of the ideas grouped below them.

Creating Impact - Tips and tricks

To make the higher impact he gave advice like put pictures on right side and text on left side. Also added that one should put a quotation, or a question, video to engage the audience.

Creating a 'Personal Brand' - why, how, when?

A personal brand is a unique combination of skills and experiences that make you who you are. It is how you present yourself to the world. Effective personal branding will differentiate you from the competition and allow you to build trust with prospective clients and employers.
The things we learned were very insightful and will be helpful during the next phase of our assignment wherein we are making a video about the local products.

We know how can we make our product stand out by focusing on its uniqueness and to target the proper crowd instead of making a generalized video. How can we use social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube to our advantage and reach our target audience and convey our product and message?

A big thank you to T. Prasad Sir for giving us the opportunity to learn from such experienced industry professionals.
